Beijing’s air quality improves in first four months of 2018

Beijing saw better air quality and more "good air" days in the first four months of this year, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau announced on Monday. Average density of PM2.5 in Beijing stayed at 59 micrograms per cubic meter of air in the four months, down 22.4 percent year on year, the bureau said. The capital saw 77 good air days from January to April, four days more than the same period last year. The number of heavy pollution days decreased by eight to seven, according to the bureau. However, the air quality in April was not as good as the previous April, the bureau said. The average density of PM2.5 was 64 micrograms per cubic meter of air, [...]

China enlists 60,000 soldiers to plant trees in war against air pollution

China is under attack on its own soil. And just as most countries with a large armed force would do, the country is deploying troops — over 60,000 members of the People’s Liberation Army — with no delay. The invading force is insidious and can’t be dealt with using traditional military tactics — the raw manpower is needed but none of the standard maneuvers of warfare apply. And this is why China is arming its soldiers with two of the most effective weapons possible: shovels and saplings. By planting a massive number of trees, China seeks to further suppress air pollution, a formidable adversary responsible for one-third of all deaths in China in 2016. The Chinese government is so serious [...]

BYD launches battery factory

Chinese electric carmaker BYD Co has opened a new lithium battery plant in Northwest China's Qinghai Province, which will be the world's biggest when construction is fully completed next year, it said on Thursday. The factory, BYD's third, can eventually produce 24 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of batteries a year, and is part of the company's plans to raise its total annual production capacity to 60 GWh by 2020, it said in a statement. BYD is building new battery production capacity to take advantage of China's aggressive new energy vehicle push, with the country desperate not only to cut air pollution from traditional combustion engines but also boost its high-tech clout.

New round of pollution inspections begins

The country's top environmental watchdog will dispatch about 18,000 law enforcement officers to conduct air pollution control inspections in three key areas started on last January. Last year, the Ministry of Environmental Protection-which has since been incorporated into the Ministry of Ecology and Environment-sent 5,600 law enforcement officers to 28 major cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to inspect air pollution control work. This year, the inspection, dubbed "Blue Sky Protection Campaign", will be extended to the Yangtze River Delta and the Fenhe and Weihe plains in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, respectively. The campaign is scheduled to last until the end of April 2019. It was launched based on the fact that some areas are still troubled by heavy pollution, despite [...]

Air Pollution and Plants

Air pollution, release into the atmosphere of various gases, finely divided solids, or finely dispersed liquid aerosols at rates that exceed the natural capacity of the environment to dissipate and dilute or absorb them. These substances may reach concentrations in the air that cause undesirable health, economic, or aesthetic effects. Plants occur over Earth’s surface in well-defined patterns that are closely correlated with both climate and the history of the planet. Forests are the most important of these natural communities from the standpoint of area, carbon content, annual carbon fixation, the cycling of nutrient elements, and influence on energy and water budgets, as well as being the principal reservoir of biodiversity on land. The most extensive forests are the boreal [...]

Pollution Art, Gravity Chopsticks at Shenzhen Design Week 2018

This year's Shenzhen Design Week (April 20-30) kicked off yesterday with a barrage of fascinating forums and events, plus exhibits around the city. At MindPark headquarters in Nanshan District, Friday saw the first set of talks in a three-day conference co-organized by innovation platform TOPYS and C FutureCity. It featured notable designers like Daan Roosegarde, whose studio created the world's tallest air purifier in 2016, then tested it out in Beijing's art district. What's more, Studio Roosegarde has used collected smog particles to create, of all things, diamond jewelry. In his talk yesterday morning, Roosegarde focused on how existing expertise can be used to create environmentally-friendly projects. Or, put another way, how to turn air-purifying into art. He was followed [...]

China to Standardize EV Technology Nationally

The popularity of electric vehicles is at an all-time high in China. Last year, the total sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for four times as much as that of those in the United States. It is expected that the margin will only grow wider this year. This shift in trend can be attributed to the fact that over the course of the next two decades, China is planning on moving away from gas-powered vehicles completely. As China is the world's largest car market, the shift to absolute battery-powered all-electric mobility is expected to have a substantial effect on the auto industry, at a global scale. China is the world's largest industrial country and this move has been engineered [...]

China Plans To Build Nearly 300 New Eco-Cities

China is not exactly known for its eco-conscious ethos. In fact, it's one of the world's biggest polluters, with limited environmental regulation stopping the flow of toxins into the environment. Even the regulations that do exist are often ignored by large companies – some 70 percent of businesses examined by environmental inspectors failed to meet environmental standards for controlling air pollution, according to a state news agency report. Now, according to the Chinese Ministry of Health, industrial pollution has made cancer China's leading cause of death. Every year, ambient air pollution alone kills hundreds of thousands of citizens, and 500 million people in the nation are without safe and clean drinking water. But as it turns out, the country is [...]

AirNow logo Local Air Quality Conditions Zip Code: State : My Current Location How Smoke from Fires Can Affect Your Health

While not everyone has the same sensitivity to wildfire smoke, it’s still a good idea to avoid breathing smoke if you can help it. And when smoke is heavy, such as can occur in close proximity to a wildfire, it’s bad for everyone. Smoke is made up of a complex mixture of gases and fine particles produced when wood and other organic materials burn. The biggest health threat from smoke is from fine particles. These microscopic particles can penetrate deep into your lungs. They can cause a range of health problems, from burning eyes and a runny nose to aggravated chronic heart and lung diseases. Exposure to particle pollution is even linked to premature death. Some people are more at [...]

5 Deadly Effects of Air Pollution

Air pollutants can potentially harm human and animal health, damage or hinder vegetation growth, and can make the living conditions in the environment unbearable. In most regions of the world, air pollution has adversely affected people and the environment in various aspects. 1. Hazardous to Human Health Air pollution threatens the human health in various ways. It causes lung disease and other respiratory problems. On numerous occasions, there is a proven huge connection between human health and air pollution, especially about premature deaths in many developing countries and even the developed world. According to World Health Organization (WHO) report in 2013, it postulates that air pollution causes about two million premature deaths annually. 2. Acid Rain When the particles, chemicals, [...]
