London’s black cabs ‘up to thirty times as toxic as personal cars of same age’, research reveals

A special message from MSN: While Christmas is a time of joy for most of us, that's not the case for the UK's most vulnerable children and young people. We've partnered with giving platform Benevity to raise funds for two charities - the NSPCC and The Children's Society – to try to help change that. You can help make a difference - please donate now. Some of the most common models of London’s world-famous black cabs are emitting up to 30 times as much pollution as personal cars the same age, research has found. Measurements of nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from over 100,000 vehicles in London have revealed the “disproportionate impact of black cabs [...]

Health effects to Air Pollution

What health effects are linked to air pollution? Over the past 30 years, researchers have unearthed a wide array of health effects which are believed to be associated with air pollution exposure. Among them are respiratory diseases (including asthma and changes in lung function), cardiovascular diseases, adverse pregnancy outcomes (such as preterm birth), and even death. In 2013, the World Health Organization concluded that outdoor air pollution is carcinogen to humans. How can I reduce my risk for air pollution exposure? Indoor air pollution can be reduced by making sure that a building is well-ventilated and cleaned regularly to prevent the buildup of agents like dust and mold. Occupants would also be wise to remove any known pollutants and or [...]

Beijing turns to railway for urban freight transport

Beijing is using railway lines for freight transport in urban areas to reduce truck emissions and ease traffic. A 50-car train carrying 3,200 tonnes of gravel arrived at a freight station in Dahongmen in Fengtai District on June 2018, marking inauguration of the project. The gravel, delivered from Tangshan City in neighboring Hebei Province, was sent to a contractor as construction material, said Zhang Jinchao, deputy general manager with the Jingtie Logistics, an affiliated company of China Railway Beijing Group. Zhang said daily frequency would be increased to 10 trains, which means 1,000 heavy trucks will be saved from running on the road every day. "Containers were adopted during the transport, which not only reduced dust pollution during loading and [...]

Paris, Beijing work together on Artificial Intelligence, smart cities

The Greater Paris Region and Beijing Municipality signed on June 2018, a five-year deal to focus on smart cities and sustainable development, Greater Paris Region President Valérie Pécresse told a press conference held in Beijing. Cooperation between the two cities, which began in 1988, will extend beyond fighting air pollution to domains such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart cities and autonomous driving, Pécresse said, noting that the two sides will fund a joint lab named City of the Future. "270 Chinese companies have invested in the greater Paris region, creating 3,700 jobs," Pécresse said, noting that there is room for further growth. Paris has become a more attractive destination than London for the first time when it comes to luring [...]

Harvard physician extols health benefits of going green — for our bodies and our planet

There was an irony to Aaron Bernstein’s getting stuck in traffic recently. The Harvard Medical School professor and physician at Boston Children’s Hospital was on his way to Allston to give a talk about the health benefits of going green. “As a routine bicyclist, I rarely drive anywhere in Boston, and I was reminded on my drive here why. It took me an aggravating 45 minutes to get a mile and a half,” he (eventually) told the audience at the Harvard Ed Portal. Bernstein, who studies how changes in transportation, diet, and energy can immediately benefit health, lectured on “The Health Benefits of Going Green: How Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Can Benefit Health Today” as part of the Ed Portal’s [...]

Temperatures to rise along with ozone pollution

Hot weather and ozone pollution are making a comeback, weather authorities say. High temperature hit more than 33 degrees. Sunny skies are predicted for both days. It will be cloudy to overcast for the rest of the week, but the high will hover around 30 degrees, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau. Shanghai saw slight to moderate air pollution, with ozone being the major pollutant. The index will read between 120 and 140 this afternoon, indicating light air pollution. It will reach between 135 and 155 tomorrow, entering the moderate pollution range which starts at 150. Slight pollution can still be expected on Thursday, the center said. Ozone pollution is created near the Earth’s surface by daylight ultra violet rays, [...]

Outdoor and indoor Air Pollution

Air pollution is a mixture of natural and man-made substances in the air we breathe. It is typically separated into two categories: outdoor air pollution and indoor air pollution. Outdoor air pollution involves exposures that take place outside of the built environment. Examples include: Fine particles produced by the burning of fossil fuels (i.e. the coal and petroleum used in energy production) Noxious gases (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, chemical vapors, etc.) Ground-level ozone (a reactive form of oxygen and a primary component of urban smog) Tobacco Smoke Indoor air pollution involves exposures to particulates, carbon oxides, and other pollutants carried by indoor air or dust. Examples include: Gases (carbon monoxide, radon, etc.) Household products and chemicals Building materials [...]

China tests giant air cleaner to combat smog

A 60-metre-high chimney stands among a sea of high-rise buildings in one of China’s most polluted cities. But instead of adding to Xian’s smog, this chimney is helping to clear the air. The outdoor air-purifying system, powered by the Sun, filters out noxious particles and billows clean air into the skies. Chinese scientists who designed the prototype say that the system could significantly cut pollution in urban areas in China and elsewhere. The technology has excited and intrigued researchers — especially in China, where air pollution is a daily challenge. Early results, which are yet to be published, are promising, says the project's leader Cao Junji, a chemist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Key Laboratory of Aerosol Chemistry and [...]

Air pollution battlefield brings investment opportunities

China's efforts to control air pollution will provide a new impetus for economic growth, with investment opportunities of 20 trillion yuan ($3.2 trillion) in the coming 12 years, according to a report by an antipollution industry group. The market potential lies in six major sectors, including coal pollution control, reduction of volatile organic compound emissions and environmental monitoring. The report, titled China's Clean Air Market Outlook 2030, was published on Tuesday by the Bluetech Clean Air Alliance, an industry alliance based in Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park, known as China's Silicon Valley. The alliance promotes air pollution control technology and the development of related industries. Experts from Beijing Normal University, Beihang University and the Asia-Pacific Consulting Center for Environment and Development [...]

By 2023 will have city constructed entirely from bamboo

Imagine a city rising from a lush bamboo forest, but this city uses no concrete and no steel; it doesn’t stick out of the forest, so much as blend in. This is the vision presented by penda, a Chinese and Austrian design firm, at Beijing Design Week this year. By 2023, penda claims, a city housing 20,000 people could be built entirely from their modular bamboo construction system, free to grow in every direction as the need arises. The system uses no nails or screws – the bamboo is tied together with ropes – leaving the bamboo cane undamaged so it can be reused in other constructions. All of the materials in penda’s bamboo city are completely recyclable, allowing the [...]
